Diagnostics & labs

Bloods, ECGs, ultrasound and swabs on site at Riverside, with results explained by the clinician who ordered them.

Laboratory equipment and sample tubes arranged on a clean worktop
Appointment length
10 minutes for phlebotomy
From
£45
Typical wait
Walk-in from 07:30, Monday to Friday

Phlebotomy is £45 plus the cost of the assays requested. A full blood count, kidney, liver, thyroid and lipid panel together is £130.

A test is only useful if someone has decided in advance what they will do with each possible answer. That principle governs everything in this department, and it rules out a surprising amount of what is sold elsewhere as screening.

On site at Riverside

Phlebotomy from 07:30 on a walk-in basis. ECG and spirometry by appointment, usually same week. Ambulatory blood pressure monitoring, which is a far better guide to treatment than readings taken in a clinic where everyone’s blood pressure is higher anyway. Ultrasound clinics on Tuesdays and Fridays.

Results

You get the numbers. Not “normal” — the actual figure, the range, and what moved since last time. We have never understood the convention of withholding this.

Abnormal results are phoned through by a clinician on the day they report, including at the end of a Friday. Nobody should spend a weekend with a notification saying only that their results are ready.

This appointment is for

  • Tests a clinician here has requested as part of your care
  • Tests requested elsewhere, where you want them done somewhere quicker
  • A routine health check with results that are actually interpreted
  • Anyone who needs a fasting sample before work

Step by step

What actually happens

From booking to follow-up, with how long each part takes. No stage of this is a surprise.

  1. 1

A request with a reason attached

Every test is ordered against a specific question. If a clinician here cannot say what they would do differently depending on the result, we will tell you that the test is not worth doing.

  2. 2

    Phlebotomy, usually without an appointment

    10 minutes

Walk in from 07:30. Typical wait is under ten minutes. Fasting samples are easiest first thing, which is why we open before most people start work.

  3. 3

    The laboratory

    24 hours to 10 days

Samples go to an accredited laboratory twice daily. Routine biochemistry and haematology report within 24 hours; histology and some specialist assays take longer, and we will tell you which yours is.

  4. 4

    Results explained, not posted

Within 1 working day of reporting

You get your actual numbers with the reference ranges, plus a plain-language note on what they mean. Anything abnormal is a phone call from a clinician the same working day, never an unexplained letter.

  5. 5

What happens next, decided with you

If a result changes the plan, we book the follow-up then. If it does not, we say so clearly, so a borderline figure does not quietly become a worry you carry for a year.

Questions

About diagnostics & labs

Something not covered here? Ask us directly.

Can I have a blood test without seeing a clinician first?

Yes, if you know which tests you want or are bringing a request from elsewhere. For a general check we would rather talk to you for ten minutes first, because an untargeted panel produces borderline results that cause more anxiety than they resolve.

How do I get my results?

Through the patient portal, with the numbers, the reference range, and a note from the clinician who ordered them. Anything that needs action prompts a phone call the same working day.

What is actually on site?

Phlebotomy, ECG, spirometry, 24-hour blood pressure monitoring, urine and swab collection, and ultrasound on Tuesdays and Fridays. X-ray, CT and MRI are referred to partner imaging centres, usually within 72 hours.

Do you offer a general health screen?

We offer a targeted one, built around your age, history and risk rather than a fixed panel. We do not offer whole-body scanning, because the evidence does not support it in people without symptoms and the incidental findings cause real harm.

Can you do tests my NHS GP has requested?

Usually yes, if you bring the request form. You pay for the phlebotomy and the assays. Results go to you and, with your consent, to the requesting clinician.
